Fall, 2009
wood, mixed media
Created for the exhibition Made in the USA, at 320 South Harrington Street in Raleigh, NC, this show opened in October, 2009.
The project was sighted using golden mean points in the room. A scale model of the room was hung from golden lines that ran the length and breadth of the space, using wood that was found on the site. The bench was designed based upon architectural details of the site, using the golden rectangle for the seat.
The concept behind this project was to locate a significant point in the room using the same geometric processes that were used by Renaissance artists among others. Having located this point, participants were encouraged to sit on the bench and experience the space from this ideal location. It was hoped that this would encourage them to locate their own ideal center and spend time with it.
